If It's Not In A Glass I'm Not Drinking It
There is no denying the satisfaction inherent in popping the cap off a beer at the end of a long day and swigging it straight from the bottle. However, pouring a frosty beer into a pint glass has its own rewards.
Perhaps you’ve been turned off on this notion after hearing a beer geek friend expound one too many times on the subject, but give me a chance to persuade you. If you love craft beer, pour it in a glass. It’s simple really. The number one, no-joking-around reason to pour your beer in a glass is the aroma.
Aroma plays a huge role in how we perceive flavour. As most of us all know from the experience of eating while nursing a cold – the food tends to taste superbly bland right?! Drinking beer straight from a bottle or a can essentially cuts off your sense of smell and it changes the way the beer tastes quite significantly. Compare that to drinking beer from a glass.
Pouring your beer straight down into the glass activates the carbonation and creates a foamy mixture that sits so elegantly on top of the ale. Every time one of those tiny bubbles pops, it releases a little burst of aroma. The aromas you inhale as you take a sip further mix with the scintillating taste on your tongue, providing you with a full-on flavour experience.
Savour the flavour baby!!!
Pouring beer into a glass can also tell you things about the beer you’re about to drink. Its colour can give you an idea of its “maltiness” per se; the thickness and texture of the foamy top can indicate how creamy a beer it is and how sweet or bitter it will taste.
Brewers put a lot of work into that beer you love and care for so much. So next time you have 1, pour it into a glass and appreciate it for all its glory. If it’s not in a glass, personally, I don’t drink it – I love my beer that much. ;)
